Difference Type of AC EV Charger Plug

There is two types of AC plugs.

1. Type 1 is a single phase plug. It is used for electric vehicles coming from America and Asia. You can charge your car up to 7.4kW depending on your charging power and grid capabilities.

2.Triple-phase plugs are type 2 plugs. This is because they have three extra wires that allow current to flow through. They can therefore charge your car more quickly. Public charging stations have a range of charging speeds, ranging from 22 kW at home to 43 kW at public EV chargers, depending on your car’s charging capacity and grid capabilities.

North American AC EV Plug Standards

Every electric vehicle manufacturer in North America uses the SAE J1772 connector. Also known as the plug, it is used for Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (220V) charging. Every Tesla car comes with a Tesla charger cable that allows it to charge at stations that use a J1772 connector. All electric vehicles sold in North America are able to use any charger that has the J1772 connector.

This is important because every non-Tesla level 1, 2 or 3 charging station sold in North America uses the J1772 connector. All iEVLEAD products use a standard J1772 connector. The adapter cable included with Tesla’s car can be used to charge your Tesla vehicle on any iEVLEAD charging stations. Tesla creates their charging points. They use a Tesla connector. EVs of other brands can’t use them unless they buy an adapter.

It might sound confusing. However, any electric vehicle that you purchase today can be charged at a station with a J1772 connector. Every level 1 and level 2 charging station currently available uses the J1772 connector except for Tesla.

European AC EV Plug Standards

While the types of EV charger pile connectors in Europe are very similar to those in North America, there are a few differences. The standard household electricity in Europe is 230 volts. This is nearly twice the voltage used in North America. Europe does not have “level 1″ charging. Second, in Europe, all other manufacturers use the J1772 connector. This is also known as the IEC62196 Type 2 connector.

Tesla has recently changed from their proprietary connectors to the Type 2 connector for its Model 3. The Tesla Model S and Model X cars sold in Europe use the Tesla connector. However, it is speculated that they will switch to the Type 2, in Europe.

To summarize:

Two types of plug exist for AC EV Charger:type 1 and type 2
Type 1(SAE J1772 ) is common for American vehicles
Type 2 (IEC 62196 ) is standard for European and Asian vehicles
